About Us

Restoring hope and revitalizing the lives of Manipur’s youth through specialized addiction and mental health recovery.

Our Story

In 2019, a team came together under the banner of raising hope for youth and revitalizing the life essence of young men of the state whose lives were crippled and downtrodden by substance addiction. Focused primarily on youth ranging from 13-25 years of age, Yaipokpa The Rehabilitation and Child Care Centre is one of the few private non-profitable institutions in Manipur established solely for juvenile patients. It was established on 24th October, 2016 and got registered on the following year 28th august 2017 under the section7(I) of Manipur Societies Registration Act, 1989 ( Manipur Act 1 of 1990) bearing Registration No. 1383/SR/W/2017. To address the issue of substance abuse and its catastrophic consequences, Yaipokpa The Rehabilitation and Child Care Centre was set up with the core foundation of providing help to those who are severely afflicted by substance abuse and is also one of the few rehab that treat both addiction and related mental disorders. To ensure total welfare of our target group, The Yaipokpa institution has conducted various community awareness programs about drug abuse and related issues such as breaking the stigma on drug abuse which perpetuates strongly in our society. Addiction of any form usually ends up developing mental disorder, which is why we include the treatment of mental disorder as well in our service and it is done by professional certified medical experts and doctors. The present circumstance on illicit drug trafficking and drug abuse in our society is still by far not anytime better than the past and keeps on increasing day by day, and since youth are more prone to be affected by this raging epidemic of substance abuse, The Yaipoka also emphasis effort and resources on advocating preventive awareness programs and the need for education on drug abuse effects on society and its reaction by society.

Objectives

Project Goals

Youth, being the pillars of the future of any society, we consider it a noble cause to help the young men of our state to take the right path. A society without healthy youths is the same as a barren society which eventually collapses in the near future as the younger generation represents the hope and strength of any society.

Yaipokpa The Rehabilitation and Child Care Centre primarily aims to create an enabling environment for people who use drug/substance and mental health disorders in general society devoid of illegal drugs and lead to a healthy lifestyle with dignity. Addiction shouldn’t be considered as a moral defect. Social Stigma surrounding drug abuse can traumatize drug abuse victims and devalue their worth as a human being. By spreading proper knowledge and information regarding drugs and drug abuse effects, it can help elevate the mentality surrounding drug abuse and its stigma.

Shaming the victim and dehumanising them in any way doesn’t help or won’t contribute anyway to help them get better, instead we must understand and try to approach them in a more sensible and compassionate way to make them get help. Educating the victim ‘s family about drug addiction is very important so that they can work together more effectively and deepen their bonds which will strengthen trust and understanding between them.

It is important to understand that overcoming drug addiction is a hard and long process and requires immense will power, perseverance and effort. In addition to recovering from drug misuse, the goal of treatment is to maintain a sober, responsible and productive life as contributing member of his or her family and community.

Background

Substance abuse is a worldwide phenomenon which affects more than millions every year globally destroying the lives of many and leaving the victim’s families in permanent distraught and distrust. It destroys the lives of the abuser and the family economically and as well as socially, with the sole purpose of obtaining drugs, an abuser loses sight of the consequences of their actions and proceeds to exploit relations and connection thus setting a dilapidation of self both internally and externally. Substance abuse is a terrible disease, a raging epidemic especially among the youth, upon which society dehumanizes their worth and holds the abuser accountable. Youths are more prone to ever increasing drug abuse owing to different reasons: experimentation, peer pressure, family history, self medication, mental health disorder, prescription drugs, loneliness etc or it could be linked to many of the person’s life conditions or as trivial as curiosity. However, history is irrelevant to the abuser’s end goal as their goal is recovery. Manipur being a border to Myanmar, the world’s second largest illicit opium cultivating country, has witnessed higher counts of heroin injecting than those states distant from Indo-Myanmar border. It is also crucial to note that there is an undeniable correlation between border proximity and drug abuse, Also according to a 2011 national survey of drug use among higher secondary students of Imphal, Manipur it was recorded that more than 95% of students did use some sort of substance both legalized and illicit. The age group varied from 15-19 years old, with the findings shown it is appropriate to claim that youngsters are more likely to develop drug addiction than adults, although the survey had several limitations, it was conducted among 1012 students from various schools across the state both private and government schools. The survey data provided substantial evidence to advocate the claim that the influence of drugs is strong among the high school students. Although not specifically illegal, High School students begin from legal substances like tobacco, alcohol and then begin experimenting with various other substances like cannabis, opioids, inhalants, tranquilizers and solvents, out of the 1012 students 46% used tobacco at least once in a lifetime. Looking at the demographic chart of the drug abuse population, youth constitutes a major portion. Since adolescents are not adept in self discipline and control, they are more prone to drug addiction problems and as a result creating various implications psychologically and biologically later on as a consequence of the substance exploitation. They are also likely to suffer from some sort of mental disorder especially those who have a history of prolonged use of drugs which could result in ruining their livelihood after on.

Yaipoka The Rehabilitation and Child Care Center is one of the communically renowned private rehab institutions in Imphal, Manipur and aims to address the issue mentioned by providing a range of treatment even for mental disorders associated with the addiction and ensuring to support patients to take control and improve their life. There are many Rehabilitation centres in Manipur but not many that are for Juveniles, hence it becomes increasingly complex to meet the standards for age groups thus inevitably creating shortcomings and incompatible circumstances at various occasions and levels of medication. Being aware of such implications, The Yaipokpa Rehabilitation Centre was built with the idea to tackle those challenges and help youngsters recover healthily from substance abuse. Yaipokpa The Rehabilitation and Child Care Center was built upon the core foundation of helping the youth who suffers critically from substance abuse of any form. Unlike other disorders and sickness, addiction is a very tough sickness to overcome as it requires a lot of mental strength, willpower, perseverance, endurance and support. Therefore, well proper organized institutions that value their worth and recovery are essentially vital in every society since drug trafficking is nearly impossible to prevent. Since Yaipokpa The Rehabilitation and Child Care Centre is built for youngsters, with the narrowed parameters, we are able to put more attention to the complications surrounding the selected age range. The team also consists of experienced members who have recovered from drug addiction and chose to continue to share their wisdom and experiences to help their fellow brothers.

Success & Sustainability

Our Goals for Every Child:

Monitoring and Evaluation:

For regular monitoring of the project, related agencies/stakeholders will review the project monthly and quarterly to see if the project is implemented as planned. Monthly meetings will be organized with the project team, children, stakeholders/related agency for their feedback and suggestions on the development of the project. A monthly report will be sent to the related agency/stakeholders. The team of monitoring and evaluation committee is formed to see the overall service facilities and if it functions.

Looking Towards the Future:

With the regular consultation with stakeholders/related agencies, The Yaipokpa will identify potential support agencies for needed support/involvement in the future as the program hasn’t been supported by any related agency in vulnerable situations. With the implementation of this program changes could be seen in the life of these children, who are distressed and will continue to change. Related agencies need to encourage and establish support for programs like this to embark on great changes for the youth. We will continue to connect and link with likeminded organizations and funding stakeholders/agencies that can support our program to sustain a better future.
